MICHIEL VAN BAKEL - Studied astronomy, photography (Psychopolis; Frans Zwartjes) and psychology for several years before he chose for fine art, at art school. Van Bakel expresses himself through film and videos, sculpture and installations. His work focuses on people and their surroundings, often resulting in a poetic reality. It conveys a fascination for the tension between man and technology, perception of time in a delicate man-made ecosystem. Van Bakel lives and works in Rotterdam. Synopsis

Noctambulist: Someone who sleepwalks at night.

A peculiar stroll through a fragmented urban landscape, a spinning panorama.

A night-time stroll through the urban jungle. Curiosity: people in cities walk 15% faster, just like ants in anthills. The person in this digital artwork "walks" up to 10,000% slower.

"It seems to me that I am trying to tell you about a dream — a vain attempt, because no account of a dream can convey the feeling of the dream, that mixture of absurdity, surprise and perplexity in a tremor of fighting rebellion, that notion of being captured by the incredible, which is the very essence of dreams".
